Giving Assurance - The Berkshire Build Way

Welcome to the first Berkshire Build Blog of 2016! The memory of Christmas seems a million miles away and we are all looking forward to the New Year and the exciting challenges that will bring.

For us at Berkshire Build those challenges will be to continue to provide the highest level of service and the best quality of workmanship we can possibly deliver.  For many of you, the challenge you may face is to finally fit that kitchen or bathroom of your dreams, renovate your new or existing property or build that much needed extension you have longed for!

Picking the right contractor to deliver your important project is always a difficult decision to make. How do I know they are up to the work? Is the standard of their workmanship good enough? Are they ‘fly by night cowboys?’ – Questions and concerns we have all asked and felt at some stage when planning a project!

So how do you choose the right contractor? How do you ensure that your chosen contractor will deliver what you have asked for on time and to budget?

The truth is, is that there is no magic formula and no guaranteed solution to these questions. However, all is not doom and gloom!

Here at Berkshire Build we are proud to be part of the UK Building Industry and we endeavor to ensure that we put in place everything that we can to make decision making less stressful for the ‘would be’ customer.

For example, we have strong and fit for purpose processes that are designed to assure the customer that our work will be of the highest quality. We provide testimonials on our website from past works – nothing like word of mouth to give confidence!

But in this day and age these are a given and expected. We believe at Berkshire Build that we have to provide more confidence building evidence to our customers, both existing and potential. For this reason the company became a member of the Federation of Master Builders (FMB) the UK’s largest trade association within the building industry within the UK.

The FMB has a strict membership joining criteria and a strong code of practice. Only builders and specialists who have passed the FMB’s strict vetting process will be accepted in to membership. This vetting process includes:

  • Signing up to the FMB Code Of Practice
  • Confirmation of Trading Address/Details
  • VAT Registration
  • Employer and Public Liability Insurance
  • Verification that there are no bankruptcies or CCJ’s
  • Credit and Director Checks
  • Independent inspection of building works in progress every 3 years
  • A minimum of 12 months trading history
Members of the FMB have to agree to comply with the requirements in the Code of Practice when they join the FMB and every time they renew their membership. FMB membership helps businesses to demonstrate a commitment to the highest standards of customer service and workmanship in the building industry. Since 2011, all of the FMB’s members have had to pass an independent inspection before joining and from 2015 all members will be inspected every 3 years.

An inspector from the British Board of Agrément, an independent non-profit distributing organisation accredited by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service, carries out these inspections.

To add to this Berkshire Build is also registered with Checkatrade and Rated People.
